Does a high mileage car really save you money in the long run?
I've been running the numbers on buying a cheaper high mileage car versus spending more on something with lower kilometres, and I'm not convinced the savings are as clear as they look. The upfront price is lower, obviously, but then you're potentially looking at more repairs, more frequent servicing, and a lower resale value when you eventually sell. I've been trying to discover more about how people actually calculate this, because my rough maths could be way off. Has anyone actually tracked what their high mileage car has cost them over a couple of years versus what they saved on the purchase price? I'd be interested in whether it worked out in your favour or whether you'd have been better off spending more upfront. Also, is there a mileage point where things start failing in clusters rather than one at a time?
