I’ve noticed that children often remember a story through a particular picture before they remember the words. That seems especially true with younger readers who are still building vocabulary. Good illustrated books can show expressions, settings, and small story details that the text doesn’t spell out. But too much artwork can also distract from the story. What makes the illustrations feel useful rather than simply decorative?
