I'm getting ready to schedule my first appointment with a psychiatrist, and I'm trying to decide whether to go with virtual visits or look for someone I can see in person.
The main reason I'm considering online psychiatry is convenience. Between work and family commitments, it's much easier for me to fit a video appointment into my schedule than to take time off and drive across town. At the same time, I'm worried that I might be missing out on something by not meeting face to face.
Since I've never worked with a psychiatrist before, I don't know how much the setting matters. Part of me feels like a video call should be fine since most of the appointment involves conversation, but another part wonders whether it's harder to build rapport or have an accurate evaluation when everything is done remotely.
I'm seeking help primarily for anxiety and ongoing stress, and I'd like to hear from people who have firsthand experience with online psychiatric care. Did you feel comfortable opening up during virtual appointments? Were there any drawbacks that became apparent over time, or did the convenience outweigh any differences?
I'd especially appreciate hearing from anyone who started with one format and later switched to the other. Looking back, did one approach work better for you, or did you find that the quality of the psychiatrist mattered more than whether the appointment was online or in person? |
