In the world of action RPGs, currency typically serves a simple purpose: gold to buy items from vendors, a resource to be accumulated and spent. Path of Exile rejected this convention from its inception, replacing gold with a system of orbs that function simultaneously as currency and crafting materials. This design choice has become one of the game’s defining features, creating an economy that is complex, player-driven, and deeply integrated into every aspect of the experience. For over a decade, the currency system of Path of Exile has been a subject of study, a source of frustration for newcomers, and a playground for the economically inclined.

The core of Path of Exile’s currency lies in its orbs. Unlike gold, which has no intrinsic use beyond purchasing goods from NPCs, each orb in Path of Exile performs a specific crafting function. An Orb of Transmutation turns a normal item into a magic item with one or two modifiers. An Orb of Alchemy upgrades a normal item to a rare item with up to six modifiers. A Chaos Orb rerolls the modifiers on a rare item, and a Divine Orb rerolls the numerical values of those modifiers. The rarest orbs, such as the Mirror of Kalandra, are so powerful that they have become legendary, capable of duplicating the most perfectly crafted items in the game. Because each orb has a practical use in crafting, the economy is built on supply and demand determined by player needs rather than arbitrary vendor values.

This system creates an economy that is constantly in flux. When a new league begins, the value of orbs shifts as players progress. Early in a league, simple orbs like Orbs of Alchemy and Chaos Orbs are highly valuable as players rush to craft their initial endgame gear. Later in the league, as players refine their builds, the demand shifts toward Divine Orbs and Exalted Orbs. The economy is further complicated by the introduction of new league mechanics, which often introduce new items or modify the drop rates of existing currency. Players who understand these shifts can profit by trading wisely, buying low and selling high as the market evolves.

The currency system also serves as a barrier to entry that defines Path of Exile’s audience. New players often struggle with the system, accustomed to gold-based economies where currency is a simple measure of wealth. In Path of Exile, wealth is measured in terms of orbs, but the relative value of orbs changes constantly, and the optimal way to use them is not always obvious. Should you use that Chaos Orb to reroll an item you are wearing, or save it to trade for a better piece of gear? Should you convert your lower-tier orbs into higher-tier ones, or hold onto them for crafting? These questions are central to the Path of Exile experience, and learning to answer them is part of mastering the game.

Perhaps most importantly, the currency system is inextricably linked to Path of Exile’s itemization and crafting. Unlike many action RPGs, where the best items drop from monsters, Path of Exile encourages players to create their own gear. The currency orbs are the tools for that creation. A player seeking a perfect item might use hundreds of orbs over the course of a league, rolling and rerolling modifiers, using specialized orbs to add specific affixes, and eventually crafting a piece of gear that perfectly complements their build. This process is time-consuming and resource-intensive, but it gives players a degree of control over their progression that is rare in the genre.

As Path of Exile 3.28 Currency prepares for its sequel, the currency system remains one of its most distinctive features. It is a system that rewards knowledge, patience, and economic savvy. In Wraeclast, the orbs are more than money; they are the tools with which legends are crafted. For players who have spent years navigating this economy, the orbs represent the heart of what makes Path of Exile unique: a game that trusts its players to understand complexity and rewards them for doing so.
