My father-in-law just finished restoring an old wooden sailing boat, and we’re helping him pick out some final touches. He’s really into keeping things classic, and I thought something like a ship’s bell might be a cool detail. Has anyone added one to their boat? Do they serve a real purpose or are they just decorative?

Not only does it look great and add that traditional feel, but it’s also functional — great for fog signaling and calling attention in the harbor. Guests always comment on it, too.
