Most action RPGs tie your active abilities to your class or skill tree. Choose a Sorceress, and you gain access to a specific set of spells. Choose a Barbarian, and you unlock a different set of shouts and slams. Path of Exile 1 shatters this convention with its revolutionary Skill Gem system. In Wraeclast, your active skills are not determined by your class. They are determined by the gems you socket into your equipment. This simple change creates a level of build freedom that no other game in the genre can match.

The Skill Gem system works like this. Throughout Path of Exile 1, you will find gems that grant active skills. A gem might grant the skill Fireball, allowing you to cast a projectile of flame. Another gem might grant Summon Zombie, raising a minion to fight for you. Another gem might grant Whirling Blades, a movement attack that dashes through enemies. These gems can be socketed into any piece of equipment that has a socket of matching color. Red sockets suit strength gems, green sockets suit dexterity gems, and blue sockets suit intelligence gems. Equipment can have up to six sockets, and sockets can be linked together.

The linking system is where the Skill Gem system achieves its legendary depth. When sockets are linked, you can support your active skill gems with support gems. A support gem modifies the behavior of any active skill it is linked to. Support gems have names like Lesser Multiple Projectiles, which causes your projectile skills to fire additional projectiles. Faster Attacks increases the attack speed of any attack skill. Increased Area of Effect enlarges the radius of any area skill. You can link multiple support gems to a single active skill, creating complex interactions. A Fireball linked to Lesser Multiple Projectiles, Greater Multiple Projectiles, Faster Casting, and Fire Penetration becomes a machine gun of flaming death.

The combination of active skill gems and support gems creates an almost infinite design space. In Path of Exile 1, the same base skill can play completely differently depending on how you support it. A Summon Raging Spirit build might focus on cast speed and minion damage. A Summon Raging Spirit build with different supports might focus on minion instability, causing them to explode on death. A third variant might use the spell totem support to let totems summon the spirits for you. This flexibility means that two players using the same active skill can have radically different gameplay experiences. Build guides exist for a reason. The possibilities are overwhelming.

The Skill Gem system also democratizes class choice. In Path of Exile 1, your class determines your starting location on the passive skill tree and provides access to three ascendancy subclasses. It does not restrict which skill gems you can use. A Marauder, typically a strength-based melee class, can socket a Summon Skeleton gem and become a summoner. A Witch can socket a Heavy Strike gem and start beating enemies with a two-handed mace. These choices are not optimal, but they are possible. This freedom encourages experimentation. You are never locked into a playstyle because of your class selection.

The system has its complexities. Skill gems gain experience and level up, increasing their base damage but also increasing their attribute requirements. A high-level spell might require 150 intelligence, forcing you to invest in intelligence on your passive tree or gear. Support gems also level up, increasing their mana multipliers. Casting a six-linked skill can cost hundreds of mana per use, requiring investment in mana regeneration or leech. These constraints add depth. You cannot simply socket the most powerful gems without considering your attributes and mana economy.

The Skill Gem system of Path of Exile 3.28 Currency is not beginner-friendly. New players often struggle to understand which support gems work with which active skills. The game does not clearly communicate these interactions. Many new players waste currency linking incompatible gems. However, this opacity is also the system’s strength. Learning the Skill Gem system is a journey. You start by copying a build guide. Then you start making small modifications. Eventually, you theorycraft your own combinations. Years into playing Path of Exile 1, veterans still discover new synergies. The Skill Gem system is not a feature. It is a language. And learning to speak it is the most rewarding experience the genre has to offer.
